Raw Art in Spain?

Spain has produced many of the world’s best known and revered artists including Dali, Gaudi, Picasso, Tapies, Brueghel, Bosch, El Greco, Goya, Juan Gris, Miro, Velazquez and many others beside. Spain has a plethora of world famous art museums and institutions. Information on many of these can be found at: http://www.spanisharts.com/

The Spanish artist, Salvador Dali was a founding member of the Surrealist art movement along with Andre Breton. Andre Breton’s “Manifeste du Surréalisme” was published in 1924. It was influenced by psychological theories; Breton defined Surrealism as "pure psychic automatism, by which an attempt is made to express, either verbally, in writing or in any other manner, the true functioning of thought. The dictation of thought, in the absence of all control by reason, excluding any aesthetic or moral preoccupation." (http://www.guardian.co.uk/...2026,00.html)

The Malaga born Pablo Picasso experimented with a wide range of styles and themes throughout his career including Cubism and Surrealism. Cubism initiated a pictorial revolution through its radical approach to image-making, invention of the new media of collage and sculptural assemblage, and evolution towards pure abstraction. Picasso considered himself to be a rebel. He always “retained the sense of being an outsider all his life” (http://pubs..../sr204/picasso.htm). He collected artworks by Outsider artist Scottie Wilson and made homeless outcasts the subject of some of his paintings.

Antonio Gaudí’s architectural creations established him as being an innovative leader of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement. Gaudí appears to be “an outsider in the world of architecture with his iconoclastic and unconventional means of expression—a lone genius shrouded in some sort of mysticism—he was revered by his contemporaries as a key personality in Catalonia's search for identity. He was, indeed, considered a true modernist and a prophet among his peers. He pointed the way for others to follow in intertwining the past with the future in order to create a vocabulary that would best express the ideas of the new, free-spirited and forward-looking generation of architects.” (http://www.kaiku.com/gaudi.html)

The “artist, Jean Dubuffet, was a pioneer in recognizing and collecting works of extreme individuality by creators who were not only untrained artists, but who were uninfluenced, in any way, by art being made elsewhere. Much of the art he collected was created by mental patients and prisoners. He formed the Compagnie de l'Art Brut in 1948, in conjunction with Andre Breton, and others, giving birth to what would be known as the Dubuffet concept of Art Brut and one that is strictly adhered to today by many, particularly the powerful museum in Lausanne, which has amassed the Dubuffet collection. In fact, it is claimed by the curators at Lausanne that they, and only they, have the authority to designate a work of art as being truly Art Brut, i.e.: works that are in their "raw" state, unaffected by cultural and artistic influences and which bear no relation to developments in contemporary art; works that are the innovative and powerful expressions of a wide range of individuals from a variety of backgrounds.” (http://www.respree.com/...?E+scstore)

Spain has an Outsider art museum. Martine Soria is the curator of the ‘Museo del Arte Singular’ in Altea. Martine is a native of Valencia. She has sought and obtained government support for her concept which has now been established just north of Benidorm on Spain's Costa Blanca. (Sourced from: http://www.elizabethturnbull...OutsiderArtMuseum.asp)

The ABCD Art-Brut collections in Paris and Prague contain art by three Spanish Outsider artists: Gironella Joaquim Vicens, Hernandez Miguel and Rodriguez Miguel. The Centro Cultural Espanol in Miami has exhibited an exhibition of art called “New Horizons in Hispanic Outsider Art” which includes the works of 15 artists from all around the Hispanic world (Spain, Cuba, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the Hispanics from the United States).

Spain has exhibited artworks by other kinds of people in the ‘non-mainstream’ sector. There have thus been exhibitions of art by people with Autism. Information on these can be found at: (http://www.autismo.com/museo/text.htm). These events show that there is genuine Spanish interest in different kinds of ‘non-mainstream’ art. To date, no exhibition has attempted to bring these elements together under one roof. There is thus an artistic and cultural need for a Raw Arts Festival in Spain.
